Using Airport Express for DirecTV on demand

DirecTV now offers on demand programing, the catch is you must have your DirecTV HD DVR hooked up to the internet. This is easy if you happen to have your router near the receiver but what do you do if it is, like mine, far from it? This is where an airport express can come in handy.

This is what one looks like
.

It is made by apple and works great on its own as a wireless router for your internet. But it also can be used in conjunction with another airport express or airport extreme.

In this post we will be using it as a relay station for our DirecTV on demand. Follow the instructions that came with your airport to set up one airport as your wireless internet router and the other as a relay or wds. The instructions can also be fount on Apple's website. Once your second airport is set up you just plug it into your DirecTV HD DVR to your airport's ethernet port. Go to the "network" section of your DirecTV HD DVR on screen setup. Select connect and follow the on screen instructions. You want to set it up as a wired connection, not wireless. The DirecTV HD DVR will think the airport is a wired connection even though it is not. The setup should be easy and if you have any trouble you can call DirecTV for help.

This setup has worked well for me. The other good thing with having two airports is you will get better wireless signals since they relay your internet between them. Airports may seem a little expensive at first but I found they are much easier to set up, last longer, and are backed by apple's top notch customer service. I have tried many routers and would chose apple over the others every time.

  1. I've seen many posts about using the Airport Extreme with the Airport Express, but has anyone successfully connected using a Westell router for the home network and an Airport Express to aonnect the HD-DVR? THANK YOU.
